Surfaces 2008 - A slower market makes for a focused, dynamic show.

...One of the most facinating exhibits at this year's show was Exactmosaics' natural stone mosaics, which replicate photographs or other images (the booth had on display mosaics of classic Bob Dylan and Frida Kaho) through the use of natural marble pieces. Veining and other natural formations in the stone determine how it is used in the mosaic to help the design.

The firm, which is based in San Francisco, also offers the same technique using wood, with the grain and other character marks used to create the designs. It's largely custom work and it's not cheap, but the result is unique and will last generations. The mosaics can be used in a range of applications, including flooring....
